Animal Welfare Committee

Mission Statement

The mission of the MVMA Animal Welfare Committee is to engage in such activities, as approved by the Board, which involve or promote animal welfare and/or the human/animal bond.

Goals

  • Making available resources for Michigan veterinarians concerning animal welfare

  • Promoting animal welfare and educational resources regarding animal welfare issues

  • Serve as a resource for the MVMA on animal welfare issues

Continuing Education Committee

Purpose

Assist in the promotion and delivery of veterinary continuing education programs, as approved by the Board.

Assignment

Plan and assist in the delivery of the one-day companion animal seminar series.

Ethics and Grievance Committee

Purpose

Review and attempt to mediate ethical issues and client complaints referred to the MVMA.

Assignment: Meet as needed to review the client grievance process.

Executive Committee

Purpose

Per the MVMA Bylaws, the Executive Committee is made up of MVMA’s President, President-Elect, First Vice President, Second Vice President and Immediate Past President. The Committee acts on behalf of MVMA’s Board of Directors between Board meetings. They also act as MVMA’s Finance Committee.

Food Animal Practice Committee

Mission Statement

The Mission Statement of the Food Animal Practice Committee is to:
Support food animal practitioners in the state of Michigan in matters pertaining to regulation, legislation, and continuing education. To promote, protect, and ensure the success of food animal veterinary medicine in the state of Michigan, while concurrently monitoring the health and welfare of the Michigan livestock industry.

Goals

  • Providing the latest information available in veterinary medicine to Michigan practitioners via continuing education. This may be done in conjunction with Michigan State University.

  • Providing timely responses to critical issues as they arise in Michigan food animal medicine.

  • Communicating openly and in a timely manner with the following groups: Michigan food animal practioners, veterinary medicine as a whole, livestock industries, and the public.

  • Ensure that food animal practitioners throughout the state of Michigan are adequately represented by members of the committee.

Leadership Development Committee

Mission Statement

The mission of the MVMA Leadership Development Committee is to engage in such activities, as approved by the Board, that provide a consistent and diverse leadership ladder for the organization on a state and national level.

Goals

  • The goals of the Leadership Development Committee include:

  • Providing structure and organization for continuous leadership for the MVMA and AVMA.

  • Promoting the participation of MVMA members in AVMA committee and leadership positions.

  • Improving the diversity and positive climate necessary for all members of the MVMA to participate in leadership of the organization and veterinary community.

Legislative Advisory Committee

Purpose

The purpose of the Committee is to assist the MVMA Board of Directors in formulating an implementing MVMA legislative policy and MVMA positions on State regulatory proposals.

Assignments:

  • To establish one legislative voice for veterinary medicine.

  • To ensure that the needs and concerns of veterinarians are incorporated into MVMA's legislative process.

  • To define communication channels and information flow to ensure that MVMA's staff and leadership are informed of the profession's needs, concerns, and positions.

  • To develop an administrative procedure to formulate MVMA policies on legislative and regulatory matters of concern to the profession and assist the Board of Directors to formulate legislative policy and position responses to the state regulatory process.

  • To integrate the needs and concerns of members into recommendations to the Board of Directors which represent the best interest of veterinary medicine overall.

  • To assist in the implementation of the Board of Directors-approved legislative agenda by contacting state officials and staff via email, phone fax and/or personal visits.

Membership Committee

Purpose

Assist MVMA staff in recruiting new members and retaining current members. The committee should periodically review membership services not otherwise under committee review and make recommendations to the Board on new services as a membership benefit.

Public Health Committee

Purpose

Develop and implement those MVMA programs that address zoonotic diseases in Michigan, as approved by the Board.

Student Affiliate Committee

Assignments:

  • Review all request for funding made to the MVMA by students and determine which clubs/groups/activities will receive funds.

  • Review all potential MVMA student programs, and brainstorm ideas for new programs.

  • Review all MVMA student affiliate member benefits and suggest new avenues to be researched.

  • Be the main line of communication between the MVMA and its student membership (i.e. complaints, suggestions, etc.)

Veterinary Technicians Committee

Purpose

Identify and make recommendations to the Board on issues pertaining to veterinary technology.

Assignment: Serve as the liaison between the MVMA and the MAVT.
